President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This announcement was made in a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesman, on Thursday.
Onanuga noted that Amupitan’s nomination has received approval from the National Council of State.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Amupitan as the candidate to take the vacant role after the tenure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu came to an end.”
“Yakubu held the position from 2015 until October 2025. President Tinubu informed the council that Amupitan is the first nominee from Kogi, North-Central state, to assume this role and is non-partisan.”
“Council members reached a unanimous decision to endorse the nomination, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo praising Amupitan as a person of strong moral principles.
“Following constitutional requirements, President Tinubu will now forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for evaluation.”
Amupitan, 58, hailing from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu LGA of Kogi State, is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos in Plateau, which he is also a graduate of.
Amupitan focuses on Company Law, Evidence Law, Corporate Governance, and Privatization Law. In September 2014, he was appointed as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
