Similar to features found on Instagram, Telegram, and X, this option allows users to establish unique usernames for messaging others and participating in groups while keeping their personal contact details confidential. This initiative is intended to improve privacy, particularly in larger communities and business exchanges where the sharing of phone numbers can pose risks.
Leaked screenshots indicate a new “Username” section in user profiles, enabling individuals to select custom handles and manage the visibility of their phone numbers.
However, experts have indicated that this alteration could lead to difficulties such as username theft and impersonation. In response, WhatsApp is likely to roll out verification and additional protective measures alongside this feature’s implementation.
